ALKMAAR - The 16-year-old student admitted to hospital in critical condition on Monday died last night just before midnight, police have reported. He was taken to the hospital in Alkmaar after being struck several times outside his school.

The boy from Heerhugowaard, Gerdnan van Wijk, was a 4th year student at the Jan Arentsz Christian school in Alkmaar.

School director L. Spaans says the victim left the school after his lessons and was confronted outside by a 17-year-old boy from Alkmaar, not a student of the school. Eye-witnesses claim the 17-year-old struck Van Wijk on the head three times with a knuckle-duster. Van Wijk subsequently fell to the ground unconscious.

Ambulance workers were able to resuscitate the boy.

Police apprehended the 17-year-old suspect in his home shortly thereafter with information provided by eye-witnesses to the incident.

Spaans said this morning that camera footage shows the victim leaving the school and the suspect walking towards him. There are no cameras at the site where the incident took place however, near the bicycle parking area.

In a statement, the school community said it was "deeply shocked at the brutal assault and senseless sudden death of one of our students."

Counsellors have been brought in to help students and staff deal with the tragedy.

There are stubborn rumours among the students that the two youths had an argument over a girl. The school administration says it knows nothing about this. Nor does director Spaans know whether the two boys knew each other. The police do not want to say whether the suspect has confessed.
