Strong rise in chronically ill expected

26 July 2007 , BILTHOVEN – In the Netherlands the number of chronically ill people will rise considerably over the next twenty years. The main reason for this is the ageing population. But unhealthy habits such as smoking and overeating are also important factors.

BILTHOVEN – In the Netherlands the number of chronically ill people will rise considerably over the next twenty years. The main reason for this is the ageing population. But unhealthy habits such as smoking and overeating are also important factors.

On the basis of new findings, the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) has estimated that in 2025 940,000 people in the Netherlands will be suffering from diabetes. By that time 1,200,000 people will be suffering from osteoporosis and 540,000 will be suffering from lung diseases like asthma.
