AMSTERDAM — In contradiction to a common misconception, a greater number of women than men die each year from a stroke.

The Dutch Hartstichting [Heart Foundation] said on Monday that stroke — a heart and blood vessel condition — is the number one killer of women.

In 2003, some 7,336 women died from a stroke in the Netherlands, compared with 4,664 men, the foundation said.

In total, 36,000 Dutch people suffer a stroke every year.

Furthermore, 120,000 people are still suffering from the effects of a stroke, RTL News reported.

The yearly healthcare costs from strokes are estimated at EUR 1 billion.
