ENSCHEDE – Heavy rainfall between 10 and 11 pm last night caused major problems in Enschede. A spokesperson for the fire brigade says that a number of people had to be rescued from flooded tunnels along bicycle paths and motorways.

Four tunnels have been closed off because of flooding. Many cellars have also been flooded.

A furniture shop on the Hengeloseweg in Enschede collapsed because of the storm. "Furniture was floating in the street," says the fire brigade spokesperson.

Manhole and drain covers also became loose at various places throughout the city.
