HAREN – An outbreak of stomach flu has claimed the life of a resident of a nursing home in the town of Haren in Groningen.
35 other residents have now contracted the flu. Three have been taken into hospital, one in critical condition.
Seven staff members at the Zonnehof nursing home have fallen ill as well, the local health authorities (GGD), police and fire brigade in Groningen announced on Sunday at a press conference.
The GGD says there is nothing particular about the flu, but that a remarkably high number of people have been infected. The virus can cause a lot of damage because nursing home residents generally have less resistance to disease.
