Steep decline in production levels

There was a sharp drop in industrial production and turnover last November, according to Statistics Netherlands, the Dutch statistics office.

AMSTERDAM -- The fall in turnover of 14 percent compared to November 2007 was exceptionally sharp. Production was six percent down on the same period in 2007, which constitutes the greatest decline since records began in the early 1990s.

The drop in production holds for all industrial sectors, but the clothing, petroleum and chemical branches were hardest hit. Statistics Netherlands says the fact that November 2008 had two working days less than the previous year was also a contributory factor.
