AMSTERDAM - An empty boat will take part in Amsterdam's Gay Pride floating parade on 2 August.

The vessel is being sponsored by the development organisation Hivos who wants to draw attention to the plight of homosexuals in the developing world where people can rarely be open about their sexual orientation.

Hivos wants the public observing the parade to realise that homosexuals in seven countries can still be given the death penalty and that in 79 other countries, homosexual behaviour can result in a prison sentence.

Many of these countries are in Africa and Asia.
