A Dutch soldier who accidentally shot his colleague in Afghanistan has been sentenced to 240 hours of community work.

THE NETHERLANDS – A Dutch soldier who accidentally shot a colleague in Afghanistan's Uruzgan province in February 2007 has been given the maximum sentence of 240 hours of community work.

The 24-year-old soldier, who has since been discharged, had aimed a weapon at a colleague, ordering him to kneel.

The gun accidentally went off, injuring the soldier in his elbow and belly.

The military court expressed dismay that the soldier had breached the army's safety codes. The defendant's lawyer had pleaded for an acquittal arguing there had been no intent to harm.
