Dozens of flights have been delayed or cancelled at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport due to the wintery conditions. The airport has warned passengers to check their flights before leaving for the airport.

Nevertheless it is very busy at Schiphol. In the departures lounge, there are long queues of people trying to find out when they can get away. Airline personnel are trying to rebook passengers onto other flights. The airport has deployed extra staff to inform passengers about delays.

Hot drinks and snacks are being handed out. Earlier the NOS public news broadcaster Radio 1 reported that shops at the airport were having trouble replenishing their stocks.

On Friday night, around 3000 people slept in the departures lounge and behind the passport control because of cancellations. The airline was only able to set up 1700 camp beds. Others had to sleep on reclining seats and benches.
