The first day of the busiest weekend of the year at Amsterdam's Schiphol airport has passed off without major problems.

Amsterdam - The first day of the busiest weekend of the year at Amsterdam's Schiphol airport has passed off without major problems. According to the border police, around 156,000 passengers passed through the airport on Friday.

Long queues started forming early in the morning.

Some travellers were affected by malfunctioning of the baggage handling system between 4am and 6am, causing a number of flights to be delayed. Some planes took off without baggage, which was to be sent on afterwards.

Worst hit was Transavia, which was forced to leave behind around a quarter of the baggage, some 1,500 pieces, during the two hours of the system failure.

A total of more than 450,000 travellers are expected to pass through Schiphol this weekend. Due to the global recession the figure is somewhat lower than in preceding years.
