AMSTERDAM –Smoking pillars like those found on train platforms may be placed outside catering establishments next year. This would prevent streets from becoming littered with piles of cigarette butts and ash.

The Keep the Netherlands Clean Foundation said in the Telegraaf on Monday that it will soon hold talks on the matter with the catering industry and municipalities. The organisation is concerned about the smoking ban that is planned for the catering industry from 1 July 2008.  "More and more people will be smoking on the streets and lighting up outside results in piles of trash, like cigarette butts, on the ground."

The morning paper reports that Koninklijk Horeca Nederland, the sector organisation for the catering and hospitality industry, supports the initiative. "We like the idea of getting rid of the cigarette butts. Even though establishment owners are already obligated to clean up litter within a radius of 25 metres from their business. The professional business owner makes sure that the entrance to his business looks spic and span."
