AMSTERDAM – Indoor ski slopes in the Netherlands have seen more visitors than usual. Managers say that people are seeking relief from the heatwave in the “snow”.

"People come here in their swimming costumes with skis hanging round their neck, and then they go on to the piste," said Dick Vierling, marketing manager of SnowWorld in Zoetermeer and Landgraaf on Friday.

SnowPlanet, in the Spaarnwoude, a recreation area near Amsterdam, has seen people arriving in slippers, only to go onto the slopes dressed in full winter sports outfits.

"It’s busier than other summers,” said spokeswoman Sandy Perquin. “You notice that a lot of people are quite overcome by the heat, and they come to us to cool off.”
