Sinterklaas arrives in Harderwijk

At long last, Sinterklaas and his Peters are back. They and their ship packed with presents are arriving this afternoon in Harderwijk.

St Nicholas will be welcomed by Mayor John Berends before mounting his dappled grey steed for a ride through the historic town centre. St Nicholas, the patron saint of children, sailors and Amsterdam, will also deliver a speech to the congregated children. The event will culminate with a performance by the Peters band, who will sing a number of Sinterklaas songs.

The entire event can be seen on television in a special Sinterklaas news broadcast.

The name day of Saint Nicholas 280-342, the bishop of Myra in present-day Turkey, is 6 December. In the Netherlands his feast is celebrated the evening before, in Belgium on the morning of 6 December.
