Dutch police have arrested four suspected robbers after a car chase on the A6 motorway and a shootout at a petrol station on the A1 near the town of Muiden.

Police have closed the A1 in both directions to conduct an investigation, causing major disruption to morning rush hour traffic. The A1 is the main traffic artery linking Amsterdam to the east of the country.

The robbery took place at a house in the town of Marknesse in the province of Flevoland earlier this morning. The four robbers fled when the police arrived at the scene, which led to a high-speed car chase down the A6 and A1 motorways. One of the suspects was injured when their car flipped over near the petrol station.

A police spokesperson said that a ‘shooting incident’ ensued in which a second suspect was injured. The third suspect was later found nearby in a state of hypothermia. A police helicopter was deployed to track down the fourth suspect.
