ENSCHEDE – The animal shelter Dierenopvangcentrum Enschede will resume charging the usual fee of EUR 57.50 to people who adopt cats.

A ‘sale’ during which people could adopt cats for ‘any reasonable offer’ has been cancelled, board member J van der Heide said on Monday.

The shelter, like numerous others in the Netherlands, faces a surplus of cats. Around 120 of them are waiting there for a new home.

The centre started the ‘sale’ last Friday and planned to continue it until next Saturday.

But the animal protection organisation Dierenbescherming was not happy with the ‘price stunt’, a spokesperson said.

The shelter decided to stop the action after a discussion with the Dierenbescherming.

Van der Heide expressed regret.
