Shell oil leak not yet under control

Anglo-Dutch oil company Shell has been unable to completely seal an oil leak at one of its platforms in the UK sector of the North Sea.

The spokesperson who made the announcement was unable to say how much oil has flowed into the sea. Shell says that the spill occurred on Friday night at the GannetAlpha production platform, located 180 kilometres from the Scottish town of Aberdeen. The company immediatelyreduced the pressure in the pipeline to slow the flow oil and is now trying to further isolate the leak.

Environmental organisation Greenpeace has complained about a lack of information. Spokesperson Ben Ayliffe said that “At the moment we don’t know how serious the situation is. What we do know is that the North Sea should be extremely safe. They have told us that oil spills there were not possible.”
