Sharp surge in epidural deliveries

There has been a sharp increase in the number of women who want an epidural when giving birth, reports newspaper AD.

The number has jumped from five percent in 2003 to 20 percent in 2010.

Many women wonder whether labour pains are useful or should be part and parcel of a delivery, the paper writes.

Dutch women nowadays fear losing their dignity and want to remain in control during the delivery, says Mariël Croon, who has written a number of books on pregnancy.

“A natural birth is a messy affair and more and more women dislike the idea”, she says.
