"Several" Dutch nationals were on board the Libyan plane that crashed on landing at Tripoli airport Wednesday, the Dutch government said, without confirming that a Dutch child was the sole survivor.

"We have at this moment clear indications that there were several Dutch nationals on board of the crashed" plane from South Africa, foreign ministry spokesman Christoph Prommersberger told AFP.

He said there was "no information yet" to confirm reports that an eight-year-old Dutch boy survived the crash.

"Our embassy in Tripoli has sent representatives to the airport to get more information and to assist any Dutch citizens who need to be helped."

There was no immediate indication of the cause of the crash, which occurred as the Afriqiyah Airways plane was landing after a flight from Johannesburg at around 6 am (0400 GMT).
