The National Alarm Centre for Child Pornography says there was a dramatic increase in reports of child pornography on Dutch websites in 2007.

The websites are often developed in other countries but are put online by Dutch internet providers.

Current affairs TV programme Nova revealed that there were 700 reports in 2007, around seven times more than in 2006.

Speaking on the programme, Dutch justice minister Ernst Hirsch Ballin said he was shocked by the figures and is working on tougher legislation.

The Socialist Party has called for a parliamentary debate on the issue. It argues that the minister should have forced providers to block all websites showing child pornography a long time ago.
