THE HAGUE - The nature of the comments and the performance of faction leader Geert Wilders of the Freedom Party (PVV) do not play a role in the question of whether he will be given protection and security, nor do the costs.

Justice Minister Ernst Hirsch Ballin wrote this also on behalf of Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende in reply to written questions of senator Düzgün Yildirim. The cabinet feels that it is essential for the democratic rule of law to function safely and undisturbed.

The government therefore has special responsibilities regarding the security of politicians. The underlying principle is that individuals who are being threatened should, regardless of the threats, be able to do their job as normally and undisturbed as possible.
