NIEUWEGEIN – Dozens of containers with post bags were sitting ready for processing at TNT Post's sorting centre in Nieuwegein on Tuesday morning. Every day 120 freight trucks drop off about 3 million Christmas cards at the sorting centre.
More than 1,000 employees work to process this Christmas post. The postal company expects that a total of more than 190 million Christmas wishes will be sent by post this year.
Despite the possibility of sending Christmas greetings by email or sms text message, the Christmas card is still popular, says a spokesperson for TNT. "About 30 cards are sent per household. Women between the ages of 35 and 50 send the most cards."
