AMSTERDAM — Transport Secretary Melanie Schultz van Haegen came under heavy fire during an emergency debate in the Lower House on Thursday.

The opposition have threatened to withdraw their support for Schultz because she has not been firm enough with Dutch rail NS regarding its plans for the 2007 timetable changes.

NS plans to lengthen journey times in the Randstad and to the north and east of the country.

The Parliament's transport commission wants to prevent Schultz giving the green light to the plans and remains dissatisfied with the proposed timetable.

The emergency debate in the Lower House on Thursday came just days before Schultz takes maternity leave on Monday.

The new timetable is scheduled to be introduced on 10 December.
