Dutch snow boarder Olympic champion Nicolien Sauerbreij has won a silver medal in the parallel slalom at the Snowboard World Championships in La Molina, Spain.

She was beaten in the finals by Norwegian snowboarder Hilde Katrin Engeli. Bronze went to Claudia Riegler from Austria.

It is the first time Sauerbreij has won a medal at a World Championship competition. So far, her best result was fourth place in 2007.

The Dutch snowboarder qualified in eighth place for the final. Earlier in the week, she was disappointingly knocked out of the giant parallel slalom early in the competition.

Nicolien Sauerbreij became sportswoman of the year in the Netherlands in 2010 and won a gold medal for the giant parallel slalom at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.
