AMSTERDAM — The Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and the Syrian Foreign Ministry have promised that the 'abducted' Dutch children Sara and Ammar can return home to the Netherlands.

The announcement was made by Dutch Foreign Minister Ben Bot on Wednesday, who had earlier said he hoped the children could return to the Netherlands before the New Year.

The children have been staying at the Dutch embassy in Damascus since June after they escaped from their father who had taken them to Syria in 2004. The children want to return to their Dutch mother in the Netherlands.

Bot said an intense exchange of letters had taken place between Syria and the Netherlands in the past 10 days. He is confident the Netherlands can meet the (unspecified) conditions in order for the children to return home.
