Salesian friars agree to mediation
A number of former Dutch Salesian friars who have been accused of child sex abuse have agreed to a round of professional mediation for the benefit of their victims. If deemed necessary, they will also meet the victims. The prior of the Salesian congregation Herman Spronck made these announcements on Tuesday.
At the weekend, Prior Spronck attended a meeting of victims of sex abuse by clergy. The group included 23 men and one woman. An external team of expert mediators will represent the victims, in particular from a financial perspective.
In the past few weeks, Prior Spronck has met with the perpetrators mentioned in reports to a government appointed commission charged with investigating the extent of child sex abuse in the Dutch Roman Catholic Church.
