AMSTERDAM – Socialist party SP leader Jan Marijnissen thinks that his party has been treated "scandalously" by the Christian democrat CDA, Labour PvdA and Liberal VVD in the negotiations on new provincial governments.

These parties made prior agreements to keep the SP outside of the provincial executives, Marijnissen said on the television programme Pauw and Witteman on Wednesday.

The SP won significant gains in the provincial elections earlier this month, but subsequently has dropped out of virtually all the negotiations for the various provincial executives because of incompatibility with the other parties involved in these negotiations.

Marijnissen says his party took a very reasonable position in these negotiations but that the other parties showed "a disgraceful attitude of unwillingness" to work with the SP. He thinks the CDA, PvdA and VVD are afraid to form a provincial executive with the SP because they have seen that the SP has managed to lead a number of municipalities very effectively.
