THE HAGUE – The Socialist SP lashed out at Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende on Wednesday. MP Harry van Bommel says the prime minister switches sides, is not honest and has put a bomb under proposed legislation that would make it possible to hold a referendum on the new European Reform Treaty.

Van Bommel, who submitted just such a proposed bill on Wednesday, cited a leaked list of decisions from the cabinet which the Volkskrant reported on at the end of September. The list states that the members of the cabinet will not cooperate with any parliamentary initiative to make a referendum possible. The prime minister refused to answer questions on this earlier, since consultations in the cabinet are confidential.

There is no majority in Parliament for a referendum in any event. The SP submitted the proposed bill also on behalf of green-left GroenLinks, Democrats D66, the Freedom party PVV and the Party for the Animals. A majority of Christian democrats CDA, ChristenUnie, Labour PvdA and Liberal VVD is opposed to a referendum.
