THE HAGUE – The Socialist Party (SP) lost 1,700 members during the first six months of this year. Party secretary Hans van Heijningen says about 500 people had not paid their membership dues and had therefore been struck from the party's register by the SP. He told the NOS this on Friday.

Van Heijningen says that some membership cancellations were also the result of the bad publicity the party has received recently, like the expulsion of senator Düzgün Yildirim, who refused to surrender his seat in the Senate after being elected by preferential votes. The SP insisted on adhering to its predetermined candidate list order and wanted to give the seat to someone higher on the list, but who had not received as many votes in his name. Düzgün Yildirim has since started his own party.

The SP currently has about 50,000 members, twice as many as seven years ago, Van Heijningen reports.
