THE NETHERLANDS - At a Socialist Party day trip to a theme park, SP leader Jan Marijnissen sharply criticised Dutch Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende for his absence in the debates on health care, education and public transport.

He also accused the prime minister of a lack of leadership and direction.

He said the Labour Party should never have entered into a cabinet with the Christian Democrats and without the Socialist Party, which was the biggest winner in the last elections.
