Ruud van Nistelrooij is about to return to the Dutch national squad. The 34-year-old SV Hamburg striker was called by national coach Bert van Marwijk to replace Robin van Persie. The Arsenal striker is injured and unfit to play in the European Championship qualification matches against San Marino on Friday and Finland on 7 September.

Van Nistelrooij will join the national squad on Tuesday morning. He last played on the national team in a lost match against Russia during the 2008 European Championships. The talented striker has suffered a number of injuries over the past few years. He was eager to play in the World Cup in South Africa but was not selected by Van Marwijk.

After the World Cup, Van Nistelrooij said he still wanted to make a come-back with the national team. He underscored his ambitions with an excellent start in the German Bundesliga. The former striker of PSV, Manchester United and Real Madrid scored three goals in the first two matches of the competition. So far, Ruud van Nistelrooij has played 64 matches for the Dutch national team in which he scored 33 goals.
