RIJSWIJK – Liberal VVD leader Mark Rutte has demanded that Rita Verdonk and other members of the party's parliamentary faction concentrate on their own tasks. They may only comment on their own areas of responsibility when talking to the media.

Rutte's statement comes in response to a comment from Verdonk last week, who dismissed Rutte as "not very right wing." Rutte made his statement in De Telegraaf on Monday.

"This ground rule is set in stone and I am sticking to it. Rita is spokesperson for education and youth care and so these are the only topics on which she will be commenting in the media. Anyone else who cannot put aside their ego in favour of the liberal vision should get out."

"There has been fuss about personalities since the departure of Bolkestein. Look at what happened with Van Aartsen and Zalm. The limit has been reached," the VVD leader says that enough is enough. "I won't shy away from expelling anyone from the faction if it becomes necessary."

He says he has no need whatsoever to throw Verdonk out of the faction, but did say that Verdonk's comments last week were "more than a work-related accident." He says that trust within the faction has been betrayed.
