Rutte accused of playing double game

The speaker of the European Parliament Martin Schulz accuses Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte of playing a double game.

He made his remark after meeting Mr Rutte on Thursday to discuss the controversial Freedom Party website where people can file complaints about migrant workers from Eastern Europe.

Mr Schulz referred to the different roles played by the Dutch prime minister on the national and the European level.

In the Netherlands, Mr Rutte is careful not to upset Geert Wilders’ Freedom Party, on which the prime minister’s minority cabinet depends for parliamentary support. However, on the European level he claims the Freedom Party and its controversial website is nothing to do with him.

Mr Schulz had invited Mr Rutte to clarify the Dutch government’s position.
