Russian activist seeks asylum in the Netherlands
Russian activist Aleksander Dolmatov has requested political asylum in the Netherlands, according .
Dolmatov worked as a designer for a company that makes tactical rockets. He claims that his association with a non-registered opposition party led the Russian secret service to persecute and threaten him.
“A manager at the company where I work told a reporter that they will murder me,” Dolmatov told via telephone from an asylum centre somewhere in the Netherlands.
On 6 May, Dolmatov was arrested while protesting against Vladimir Putin’s third term as president. The police say he failed to heed their instructions.
Dolmatov has been in the Netherlands since 9 June. The next day, Russian authorities conducted a wave of house searches, including Dolmatov’s parents’ home. Dolmatov says this convinced him to ask for political asylum in the Netherlands. He officially made that request on 13 June.
