Russia lifts ban on European vegetables
Russia’s ban on European vegetables, enacted after a recent E. coli outbreak, has been lifted. The European Commissioner of Health John Dalli announced the move Wednesday during a visit to Moscow.
Exports to Russia are expected to resume later this week, said Dalli. For a limited time, however, certain countries exporting vegetables to Russia must provide certificates proving their safety.
The E. coli outbreak claimed the lives of 36 Germans and one Swede. Bean sprouts grown in Germany are said to have been the source of the bacteria. Despite the connection, the EU has called Russia’s reaction out of proportion.
