Russia-Ukraine gas deal off
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has called off the agreement over gas supplies between Russia and Ukraine.MOSCOW - He says that Ukraine has made several changes unacceptable to Moscow. What these changes consist of is not known.
On Saturday, the two countries agreed that Russia would restart its supply of natural gas to Ukraine as soon as European Union observers arrived in Ukraine.
The observers were to monitor the amount of gas flowing into the country from Russia and compare it with the amount leaving for Europe, to ensure that Ukraine was not draining gas for its own use.
Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has said he wants to send a delegation to Brussels on Monday to discuss the situation with the EU.
Russia halted its supplies to Ukraine at the beginning of the month after the two countries failed to reach agreement on increased gas prices.
Russia had also insisted that Kiev settle its outstanding gas debts. The cessation of supplies has left hundreds of thousands of people in Eastern and Central Europe without heating.
