Row over Dutch 'lesbian' coach in Jordan
In Jordan, a row has erupted about an alleged lesbian relationship between Dutch soccer coach Hesterine de Reus and her assistant – also a Dutch woman.
Ms de Heus, 49, took up the position as head coach of the national women’s team last October. Jordanian media report that three of the players are refusing to attend training sessions until the allegation has been investigated.
The Dutch coach has declined from commenting on the affair and will only answer questions concerning football. A spokesman from the Jordanian football association said his organisation did not want to meddle in private matters and that the reports were all based on rumours. He stressed that Ms de Reus was good in her role as coach.
When asked if Ms de Reus could be sacked if it’s confirmed that she is lesbian, the spokesman said he did not want to pass judgement before knowing more about the situation.
Between 1983 to 1993 Ms de Reus gained 44 caps for the Dutch national women’s team. Jordan won the women’s 2010 Arabia Cup last November after she took over at the helm.
