The city of Rotterdam wants bus and tram passengers to switch over to using the OV-chipkaart as of February 2009.

Rotterdam – A new plan proposed by the city of Rotterdam may see paper strippenkart disappear from the city as of 11 February 2010.

The plan, which is subject to approval by state Secretary, Tineke Huizinga, will mean that bus and tram passengers will have to use the OV-chipkaart (chip card) while travelling within the city.

Rotterdam was the first city in the Netherlands to abandon the existing ticket system on its metro in favour of the new chipkaart in January. The strippenkart is still used on buses and trams.

The introduction of the OV-chipkaart is inline with the government's plan to replace all strippenkart throughout the whole of the Netherlands.
