ROTTERDAM - Rotterdam will be the first Dutch city to introduce chip cards for public transport as of end of January.

The city has experimented with chip cards for some time. The council believes turnstiles have made it more difficult for people to travel on public transport without paying.

Dutch Deputy Transport Minister Tineke Huizinga has come under severe criticism because of problems surrounding the security of chip cards.

In September, consumer organisations even declared they had no faith in the new system. No decision has been taken on introducing chip cards nationally.
