Officials want to bring the games back to the Netherlands one century after Amsterdam hosted the Olympics in 1928.

Rotterdam – Rotterdam will make a bid to host the 2028 Olympics, de Telegraaf reported on Tuesday.

City officials said Rotterdam has a tradition of major sporting events, citing examples like the Tour de France in 2010 and the Athletics World Championship.

The national sports body NOC*NSF has for years tried to persuade a Dutch city to make a bid for hosting the 2028 Olympics. The Netherlands hosted the 1928 Olympics in Amsterdam.

Countries have until 2016 to declare themselves official candidates.

Rotterdam's eternal rival, Amsterdam, has suggested it may also bid for hosting the games in 2028.
