Rotterdam still world's 10th container handler
The port of Rotterdam was ranked the number ten container port last year. The annual list produced by maritime information bureau Dynamar shows that the Dutch port maintained its 2009 position in the ranking of eleven cities dealing with more than 10 million containers a year.
Shanghai is the number one port, handling over 29 million containers, closely followed by Singapore with 28 million and Hongkong 23 million. Rotterdam transferred some 11 million containers in 2010, up 14 percent from the previous year. Dynamar consultant Frans Waals told reporters on Tuesday that "it was the best year ever for the port of Rotterdam, including for its container transhipments".
Together the eleven ports on the ranking handled 40 percent of the world's 188 million containers.
