Rotterdam starts to phase out metro tickets

Rotterdam's alderman for traffic and transport, Jeanette Baljeu, has removed the first ticket stamping machine from the city's metro system.

From 29 January all travellers using the city's metro system will have to use the new public transport smartcard, also known as the "chipkaart."

Rotterdam is the first city in the Netherlands to abandon the existing ticket system on its metro in favour of the new smartcard.

It is not yet known when the rest of the Netherlands will follow suit. The introduction of the smartcard has been dogged by delays to due concerns about security and customer friendliness.
