ROTTERDAM – Rotterdam residents have a life span 18 months shorter than the rest of the Dutch. This emerged on Thursday from a study by Erasmus Medical Centre.
There are relatively more smokers in Rotterdam and the concentration of particulate matter in the air is 13 percent higher than elsewhere in the country. The lower educational and income levels also play a significant role.
In 2006 Rotterdam residents emerged to be relatively less healthy than other Dutch. The reasons for this have now been discovered. The regional health authority GGD is looking into what it can do with the study results.
The study says that Rotterdam residents would be better off installing a ventilation system in their home rather than opening a window.
