ROTTERDAM – Rotterdam remembers the bombing of the city today by the Germans exactly 67 years ago.
Ceremonies are being held throughout the afternoon.
At 1.20 pm two minutes of silence were observed throughout the city to mark the exact moment when Rotterdam was bombed.
After the observance Mayor Opstelten lay a wreath near the monument on the Statenweg and the churches sounded their bells.
Later in the day the restored statue 'De Verwoeste Stad' (The Devastated City) will be unveiled.
About 800 people were killed in the bombing of Rotterdam. More than 24,000 homes were destroyed, leaving 80,000 people homeless.
