A nursing home caused the 2005 death of a resident and is fined EUR 10,000.

ROTTERDAM - A Rotterdam court found a local nursing home responsible for the death of an 81-year-old resident in 2005.

Staff at the city's nursing home used Swedish restraining tapes incorrectly on the man. He died from a combination of lack of oxygen, abnormal heart beat and exhaustion.

The tapes, used to stop aggressive patients harming themselves or others, are controversial and were linked in recent years to a number of deaths.

The nursing home was found guilty of criminally negligent homicide, fined EUR 10,000 and ordered to pay the man's family EUR 7,500.
