Rotterdam festival screens mobile phone movies
The 38th Rotterdam International Film Festival opens today, featuring around 700 short and full-length films from all over the world.
ROTTERDAM—The IFFR is the largest film festival in the Netherlands and ranks among the larger festivals in Europe.
This year the Rotterdam festival will be experimenting with extreme screen sizes, both large and small. Films will be projected onto tall buildings in the city centre, and specially-made films will be screened on mobile phones.
The festival is renowned for showcasing experimental film and the work of new directors. This year it opens with the US film The Hungry Ghosts, directing debut of actor and screenwriter Michael Imperioli (The Sopranos). The film is one of the nominations for the festival's VPRO Tiger Awards. Imperioli will be among nearly 400 directors in Rotterdam to present their work.
All films are shown in the original language and the majority are subtitled in English. The festival runs until 1 February.
