AMSTERDAM — A leak in the pipes feeding the district heating system in the heart of Rotterdam on Thursday caused steam and water to come up through paving stones on a cycle path next to the Coolsingel shopping district.

The damaged pipes were quickly sealed off, a spokesperson for energy company Eneco said. Tram services in the area were suspended before being diverted away from the problem area. There were no reports of accidents or injuries.

Eneco said it is working to establish the cause of the problem. The heating system in the centre of Rotterdam is still in operation.

Burst pipes caused thousands of litres of boiling water to flow into the shopping centre in the Beurstraverse last December. Several people suffered scalding to their feet and shops suffered extensive water damage.

Ironically, Rotterdammers refer to the below ground level shopping centre as the 'Koopgoot' (Shopping gutter).

Police said on Thursday the latest incident has caused far less damage.
