Rotterdam demands explanation for telecom breakdown
Rotterdam Mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb has demanded a full explanation from telecom provider KPN for the major breakdown in the South Holland communications network on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.
Emergency services were largely unavailable and the Rotterdam metro was brought to a standstill, stranding tens of thousands of commuters.
The Rotterdam Rijnmond Security Region responded by raising its emergency threat level. Warnings were issued to old people's homes and hospitals when automatic fire alarms failed.
The problems were resolved by around 8.30 a.m.
The Security and Justice Ministry has announced an investigation into the cause of the breakdown and its consequences.
