Rotterdam chopper crash kills three
A helicopter covering a cycling race has crashed near Rotterdam, killing three people. The organisers have suspended the event, a prelude to the Tour de France.
The helicopter came down in a nature reserve in the Maasvlakte, an industrial area west of Rotterdam. Aside from the pilot, the chopper was carrying three reporters and a port official. Their names have not yet been announced.
The reporters were covering the Tour du Port, an amateur race a week ahead of the Tour de France, which this year starts in Rotterdam. The thousand cyclists who had joined the race were told to stop. Many of them witnessed the tragedy and were later given psychological attention in a football stadium. The medal ceremony was cancelled.
The organisers are considering to tone down the opening of the Tour de France, which will begin next weekend.
