Iran decided on Tuesday to expell the British ambassador after the United Kingdom imposed sanctions on Iran because of its nuclear programme. Mr Rosenthal said the situation in Iran would be discussed at an EU meeting on Thursday.

Freedom Party leader Geert Wilders said the Netherlands should immediately break off diplomatic ties with Iran. However, Minister Rosenthal refused to comment on the statement saying that. “ The Freedom Party is responsible for its own statements.”

Prior to his meeting with the two Dutch ministers, President Obama said he was “deeptly concerned” about the situation in Tehran.
