Rosenthal: Cairo must protect the Copts
“The Egyptian authorities must take direct measures to protect the Coptic Christian minority and to prosecute those persecuting them,” said Dutch Foreign Minister Uri Rosenthal after a meeting with a representative of the Coptic Church in the Netherlands, Father Arsenious El Baramousy.
The foreign minister said he was very concerned about the way in which a peaceful demonstration turned into a bloody confrontation in the Egyptian capital Cairo at the weekend. At least 25 people were killed and more than 300 injured.
Mr Rosenthal said the Netherlands and the European Union were both applying pressure on Egypt over the issue: “when freedom of religion is threatened, the government must protect its citizens,” said the minister.
